F Guitar Chord

F is the F major chord. It has three notes: F, A and C. It is the chord that stops most beginners for a while, because the standard shape asks one finger to press all six strings at the 1st fret, where the strings are at their stiffest. The smaller shapes on this page are real F chords, and it is normal to use them for months while the barre builds up.

How to play F, step by step

Index finger: press flat across the low E to high E strings at fret 1
Middle finger: 2nd fret, G string
Ring finger: 3rd fret, A string
Pinky finger: 3rd fret, D string
Strum all six strings.

Do not practice the barre to the point of pain. Short, frequent attempts build the strength faster than long sessions, and the easy shape below keeps you playing songs meanwhile.

Easy F for beginners (no full barre)

The four string F keeps the entire top half of the barre shape and drops the two bass strings. Your index lies across just the B and high E strings at the 1st fret, a small press that most hands manage long before the six string barre.

Play it in real songs right away. When the full barre starts working, nothing about your fingering has to change: the middle, ring and pinky are already in their final positions, and the index simply grows from covering two strings to covering six.

A major chord needs only its three notes to be itself: the root, the third and the fifth. The small F holds F, A and C just like the big one does. The six string barre adds doubled notes and bass weight, not new information.

When the barre buzzes

The B or high E string is silent under the barre: The strings are sinking into the soft creases of the finger. Roll the index slightly onto its bony outer edge, and shift it a touch up or down so the creases miss the strings.
The low E will not sound: Barre pressure runs out at the far end. Keep the index right behind the fret wire and pull gently back with the whole arm, letting its weight do the pressing instead of the thumb squeezing.
Your hand tires within seconds: That is nearly universal at the 1st fret. Check the thumb: it belongs flat on the back of the neck, roughly opposite the barre, not wrapped over the top. Then rest and try again; endurance comes in weeks, not days.

What makes it an F

F major is the root F, the major third A and the fifth C. It is the I chord in the key of F, the IV chord in C, and the V chord in B♭. The second job is the reason F confronts every beginner: the key of C is full of easy open chords, and F is the one member of the family without an open shape. In Let It Be and No Woman, No Cry it is exactly that IV chord, arriving once per loop.

F vs Fm

F contains A; Fm lowers it to A♭. On the barre shape the change is one finger: lift the middle finger and the barre itself sounds the G string at the 1st fret, turning the chord minor. Since both are barres, neither is easier to hold. Pick whichever the song writes, and notice how much darker the minor version feels.

Why is the F chord so hard?

It is usually the first full barre, and it sits at the 1st fret where string tension is highest. Nothing is wrong with your hand; every guitarist has been through the same wall.

Can I play F without a barre?

Yes. The four string version on this page needs the index on only two strings, and it contains all three notes of the chord.

Is the small F a real F chord?

Yes. It holds F, A and C, which is the complete chord. It only lacks the doubled bass notes of the six string barre.

How long does it take to learn the F barre?

For most people, weeks of regular short practice before it rings reliably. Slow progress here is normal and says nothing about your ability.
