F Piano Chord

F major is the F piano chord. It has three notes: F, A and C. All three are white keys, and it is one of the three all white major chords along with C and G.

How to play F on piano, step by step

  1. Start on the F above middle C. That is the lowest note of the chord.
  2. Thumb (1): F
  3. Middle finger (3): A
  4. Little finger (5): C
  5. Press them together with the right hand. The left hand plays the same notes with fingers 5, 3, 1 an octave lower, or just F on its own as a bass note.

F, C and G are the three major chords that use no black keys at all. Learning them together gives you the whole of a song in C with three hand shapes.

Lighter than root position and less final. The third in the bass tips the chord forward, which is why it so often sits between two other chords rather than at the end of a line.

Open and a little unresolved. A fifth in the bass sounds like the chord is on its way somewhere, which is exactly how it is used: as the step between two chords whose roots are further apart.

If it sounds wrong

The chord sounds like something else
Check the middle note is A, not G or B. From F, skip G to reach A, then skip B to reach C.
The thumb note is too loud
The thumb is heavy and it sits on the root, so it dominates easily. Let it press with the side of the tip rather than dropping the arm's weight through it.
It clashes with the left hand
If the left hand is playing an F below, keep the right hand shape above middle C. Two versions of the same chord too close together sound thick rather than full.

What makes it an F

F major is the first, third and fifth notes of the F major scale: F, A and C. It is a major chord because the gap from F to A is four half steps.

It is the I chord of F major, the IV of C and the V of B flat. Its role as the IV of C matters most on piano: in the key of C, F is the chord that steps away from home before G brings you back.

F vs Fmaj7

Fmaj7 is this chord with an E added on top. F major sounds plain and final; Fmaj7 sounds soft and unhurried, and it is a favourite in ballads and jazz for exactly that reason.

The E is only a half step below the F above it, and that closeness is what creates the gentle blur. On piano it is one extra finger and a completely different mood.
