C Piano Chord

C major is the C piano chord. It has three notes: C, E and G. Every one of them is a white key, which is why it is the chord almost everybody learns first.

How to play C on piano, step by step

Start on middle C. That is the lowest note of the chord.
Thumb (1): C
Middle finger (3): E
Little finger (5): G
Press them together with the right hand. The left hand plays the same notes with fingers 5, 3, 1 an octave lower, or just C on its own as a bass note.

There is a shortcut for finding it: put your thumb on middle C and skip a white key twice. Thumb, skip, middle finger, skip, little finger. That pattern gives you a major chord on any white key except B and F.

If it sounds wrong

The chord sounds muddy: Check you skipped a key each time. Thumb on C, middle finger on E, little finger on G. Landing on D or F instead of E is the usual cause.
One note is quieter than the others: It is almost always the little finger on G. Let the hand lean very slightly toward the outside so the weight reaches that finger, rather than pressing harder with it.
The notes do not arrive together: Drop the whole hand as one shape from just above the keys rather than pressing three fingers separately. A chord is one movement, not three.

What makes it a C

C major is built from the first, third and fifth notes of the C major scale: C, E and G. The distance from C to E is four half steps, a major third, and that interval is the one that makes the chord sound bright rather than sad.

It is the I chord of C major, the IV of G and the V of F, which makes it one of the most used chords in western music. It is also the reason C major is the first key most people are taught: the scale, and every chord in it, uses only white keys.

C vs Cm

One note separates them. C major is C, E and G; C minor is C, E flat and G. Moving the middle finger down one key, from E to the black key just below it, turns the whole chord from bright to sad.

Try it as a single movement: hold the outer two fingers still and rock the middle one between E and E flat. Hearing that one note flip is the fastest way to understand what major and minor actually mean.
