Cm Piano Chord

C minor is the Cm piano chord. It has three notes: C, E flat and G. The middle note is a black key, with white keys either side of it.

How to play Cm on piano, step by step

  1. Start on middle C. That is the lowest note of the chord.
  2. Thumb (1): C
  3. Middle finger (3): E♭
  4. Little finger (5): G
  5. Press them together with the right hand. The left hand plays the same notes with fingers 5, 3, 1 an octave lower, or just C on its own as a bass note.

This is an ordinary C major with the middle finger moved down one key onto the black note. Practise rocking between the two: it is the clearest demonstration of major against minor on the whole keyboard.

Lighter than root position and less final. A flat third in the bass tips the chord forward, which is why it usually sits between two other chords rather than at the end of a line.

If it sounds wrong

It sounds bright instead of sad
The middle note has to be E flat, the black key just left of E. Landing on E natural gives you C major.
The middle finger slips off the black key
Move the whole hand an inch further into the keyboard. The black keys sit behind the white ones, so a hand parked at the front edge has to reach.
The outer notes are uneven
With one finger deeper than the other two the hand tilts. Keep the wrist level and let the thumb and little finger stay near the front of their white keys.

What makes it a Cm

C minor is the first, flat third and fifth of the C scale: C, E flat and G. Flattening the third by one half step is the only change from C major, and it is the whole difference between the two chords.

It is the relative minor of E flat major, the vi chord of E flat and the ii of B flat. Those are horn keys, so C minor turns up throughout soul, gospel and jazz.

Cm vs C

The middle note. C major has E, C minor has E flat, the black key immediately below it. Everything else stays where it is.

Because one is white and one is black, the change is easy to feel as well as hear: the hand moves slightly further into the keyboard for the minor.
