Gm7 Ukulele Chord

Gm7 is the G minor seventh chord. It has four notes: G, B flat, D and F. The standard shape needs three fingers inside the first two frets, and the open G string is the root itself.

Index and middle side by side at the 1st fret on the E and A strings, ring on the C string at the 2nd, G string open. The open G is the root.

How to play Gm7 on ukulele, step by step

Index finger: 1st fret, E string
Middle finger: 1st fret, A string
Ring finger: 2nd fret, C string
Leave the G string open. Strum all four strings.

The root is the open G string, so let it ring: every other note hangs off it. The barre version at the 3rd fret is the same grip Fm7 uses at the 1st, moved up two.

If it sounds wrong

The open G string goes quiet: The ring finger on the C string tends to lean back into it. Curl it onto its tip and pick the G string alone to make sure the root is ringing.
Index and middle crowd the 1st fret: They sit side by side on the E and A strings. Stagger them within the fret, index slightly ahead of middle, so both tips land square.
It sounds like plain Gm: The E string tells them apart: 1st fret for Gm7, 3rd fret for Gm. Pick it alone and listen for F, the seventh.

Gm7 vs Gm

The E string decides. Gm puts it at the 3rd fret, doubling the root; Gm7 drops it to the 1st, where it sounds F, the seventh. The other two fingers and the open G stay put.

The drop also makes Gm7 the more compact grip: everything sits inside two frets. Where a chart in F says Gm, the seventh version usually fits straight in.
