Bb Guitar Chord

B♭ is the B flat major chord, also written A♯. It has three notes: B♭, D and F. There is no open shape: the standard version is a barre at the 1st fret, which makes B♭ one of the first genuinely tough grips most players meet, usually inside a song in the key of F.

1234×B♭FB♭DF

The standard B♭: an A shape barre at the 1st fret with middle, ring and pinky stacked at fret 3. Some players flatten the ring finger across the stack instead; learn the four finger grip first.

How to play Bb, step by step

  1. Index finger: press flat across the A to high E strings at fret 1
  2. Middle finger: 3rd fret, D string
  3. Ring finger: 3rd fret, G string
  4. Pinky finger: 3rd fret, B string
  5. Strum from the A string down, skipping the low E.

B♭ lives next to F, Dm and C in real songs. Practice the change from F to B♭ most: both chords keep the index at the 1st fret, so the hand barely travels.

Easy Bb for beginners (no barre)

The shape to start with is the four string version: middle, ring and pinky stack on the 3rd fret while the index frets the high E at the 1st fret on its own. No barre anywhere, and it is exactly the top of the full shape.

You give up the low root on the A string, which softens the bass, and nothing else. In a strummed song the difference mostly disappears once other instruments are playing.

Remember what a chord actually is: three notes. Root, third and fifth; here B♭, D and F. The four string shape contains all of them, so it is not a substitute for B♭, it is B♭.

Songs that use the Bb chord

If Bb buzzes or chokes

The high E dies
Either the pinky above it is drooping onto it, or the barre is pressing with a soft crease. Curl the pinky and roll the index a little toward its bony edge.
The stacked fret 3 notes buzz
Middle, ring and pinky are sharing one fret across three strings. Keep them vertical and packed together so each presses with its very tip.
The low E hums along
It is not in the chord. Let the tip of the barre finger rest against it, and begin the strum on the A string where the root lives.

What makes it a Bb

B♭ · D · F 1 3 5

B♭ major is the root B♭, the major third D and the fifth F. It serves as the I chord in the key of B♭, the IV chord in F, and the V chord in E♭. Guitarists meet it most often in the key of F, where it is the IV chord: the What a Wonderful World loop on this page is a textbook example. Flat keys like F, B♭ and E♭ suit pianos, horns and singers, so B♭ keeps appearing whenever guitars accompany them.

Bb vs Bbm

The third drops a half step: D in B♭ becomes D♭ in B♭m. Neither chord has an open shape, so both live as barres, and on the fret 1 barre the difference is one note inside the stack: B♭m frets the B string at 2 instead of 3. Let the song decide between them; the major is warm, the minor is heavy and dark.

Bb chord questions

Is Bb the same as A#?

Yes. B♭ and A♯ name the same pitch, so the chords are identical on the fretboard. Written music picks whichever spelling fits the key; guitarists mostly say Bb.

Why is the Bb chord so difficult?

It is a barre at the 1st fret, where the strings resist the most, and three more fingers must stack inside a single fret. Both halves get easier with weeks of short practice.

Can I play Bb without a barre?

Yes. The four string version on this page uses four separate fingertips and no barre, and it contains every note of the chord.

What is the difference between Bb and Bbm?

One note: the D drops to D♭. Both are barre chords; the minor moves one finger inside the shape and sounds much darker.

What songs use the Bb chord?

From this page: Sultans of Swing, Layla (Unplugged), The Scientist and What a Wonderful World. Songs in F or Bb depend on it.
