How to play Bbm, step by step

Index finger: press flat across the A to high E strings at fret 1
Middle finger: 2nd fret, B string
Ring finger: 3rd fret, D string
Pinky finger: 3rd fret, G string
Strum from the A string down, skipping the low E.

This is the same grip as Bm, one fret lower. If Bm works and Bbm does not, the chord is fine; the 1st fret just demands more pressure.

Easy Bbm for beginners (no barre)

The friendliest way into Bbm is xx3321: four ordinary finger placements on the top four strings, no barre of any kind. It is the top of the standard shape with the index pressing one string instead of five.

It is a complete B flat minor. The chord's identity is its root, third and fifth, and all three are here: F, B♭, D♭ and another F on top. The only thing sacrificed is the low B♭ in the bass.

If the full barre is your goal, practice it at the 3rd or 5th fret first, where the strings give more, then walk it down. Arriving at fret 1 last is the path of least frustration.

Everything feels stiffer than other barre chords: You are not imagining it. At the 1st fret the strings sit closest to the nut and need the most force. If your barre works at fret 3 but fails here, that is normal; keep the barre close behind the fret and lean the arm in.
The high E buzzes: The far end of the barre gets the least pressure. Roll the index onto its outer edge so the bony side, not the soft pad, meets the high E.
Low E rings out: It is not part of the chord. Begin the strum on the A string, or let the very tip of the barre finger rest against the low E to keep it silent.
