Fsus4 Ukulele Chord

Fsus4 is the F suspended fourth chord. It has three notes: F, B♭ and C. The standard shape grows out of the open F chord: the G string climbs from the 2nd fret to the 3rd and a finger joins on the A string at the 1st, with the C string still open.

The open F chord grown by one move on each side: ring at the 3rd fret of the G string, index and middle at the 1st on the E and A, C string open.

How to play Fsus4 on ukulele, step by step

Index finger: 1st fret, E string
Middle finger: 1st fret, A string
Ring finger: 3rd fret, G string
Leave the C string open. Strum all four strings.

From plain F, push the G string finger up one fret and drop a finger on the A string at the 1st. Reverse both and the suspension resolves; that swap is the chord's whole job.

If it sounds wrong

The 1st fret notes crowd each other: Index and middle share the 1st fret on the E and A strings. Keep them side by side on their tips so neither one leans on its neighbour.
The open C string dies: The ring finger reaching the 3rd fret of the G string can brush it. Arch the finger and check the open string still rings.
It sounds like plain F: Then the B♭ notes are missing. Check the G string reached the 3rd fret and the A string is held at the 1st.

What makes it an Fsus4

Sus4 means the third is suspended: replaced by the fourth. Fsus4 keeps the root and fifth of F (F and C) but plays B♭ where the third, A, would be. The B♭ hangs one half step above A and wants to fall back onto it, which is why Fsus4 nearly always resolves to F.

Expect it in the keys of F, B♭ and C, wherever an F chord sits long enough to need decorating. The standard shape doubles the B♭, so the ukulele version leans harder than most.

Fsus4 vs Fsus2

The two suspensions replace the third of F in opposite directions. Fsus4 pushes it up to B♭ and creates tension that pulls home. Fsus2 drops it to G and leaves the chord open and cool instead.

Fsus2 is especially easy on the ukulele, so the pair together make a cheap way to keep an F bar moving: raise for pull, lower for air, land on F.

Is Fsus4 a beginner chord?

Yes. Three fingers in the first three frets with the C string open. If F is comfortable, the two extra moves come quickly.

What does Fsus4 resolve to?

F major, almost always. Both copies of B♭ fall one half step onto A and the tension releases.

Is Fsus4 major or minor?

Neither. The third has been replaced by the fourth; that refusal to commit is the sus sound.

Do you strum all four strings?
