Fsus2 Ukulele Chord

Fsus2 is the F suspended second chord on ukulele. It has three notes: F, G and C. The shape needs two fingers on the top strings with both low strings open, and the suspended G is the open G string itself, so the chord's whole colour costs no fingers at all.

Index at the 1st fret of the E string, middle at the 3rd of the A, with the G and C strings open: the suspended G is the open string.

If it will not ring

The open strings are dull: Both fretting fingers are on the top two strings; if the G or C is quiet, a finger is leaning back across the neck. Curl both and the open strings come back.
The reach to the 3rd fret feels wide: Index at the 1st fret and middle at the 3rd is a two fret spread on neighbouring strings. Let the wrist drop a little so the fingers approach from above.
It sounds like plain F: If an A is sounding, a finger has drifted onto the 2nd fret of the G string. In this chord the G string stays open; that is what makes it sus.

What makes it an Fsus2

Fsus2 replaces the third of the F chord, A, with G. With no third the chord is neither major nor minor: the G hangs, and usually steps back up to A as the chord resolves to F.

The same three notes, F, G and C, read from C spell Csus4; every sus2 chord has a sus4 twin a fifth up. F is one of the ukulele's home keys, so this chord earns constant work as the shimmer on long F bars in songs in F and C.

Fsus2 vs Fsus4

Fsus2 hangs G a whole step below the missing A; Fsus4 hangs B♭ a half step above it. One suspension arrives from below, the other from above.

The sus4 pulls hard toward F and resolves in a beat; the sus2 floats, and on this shape it floats literally on an open string. When a song needs sparkle rather than tension, the sus2 is the one.

Is Fsus2 major or minor?

Neither. The A that would make it major is replaced by G, so the chord hangs until a third returns.

Is Fsus2 easy to play?

Yes, one of the easiest shapes on the instrument: two fingers on the top strings and two strings ringing open.

Is Fsus2 the same as Csus4?

They contain the same three notes, F, G and C. If the song treats F as home the chord is Fsus2; if C is home it is Csus4.

What is the difference between Fsus2 and Fsus4?

Fsus2 suspends G, a whole step over the root; Fsus4 suspends B♭, a fourth over it. The sus4 is tenser, the sus2 more open.
