Ddim Guitar Chord
Ddim is the D diminished chord, a diminished triad. It has three notes: D, F and A♭. It is the easiest diminished chord on the guitar: the standard shape keeps the D string open and needs three fingers, and it is exactly one finger move away from D minor. This open grip is also the template for the movable dim shape used all over the neck.
Three fingers over an open D root, the same footprint as open Dm with the G string note dropped one fret. The template every movable dim shape copies.
How to play Ddim, step by step
- Index finger: 1st fret, G string
- Middle finger: 1st fret, high E string
- Ring finger: 3rd fret, B string
- Leave the D string open. Strum from the D string down, skipping the two lowest strings.
If you know Dm, you already almost know this: keep everything and move the G string finger from the 2nd fret down to the 1st. That one fret is the entire difference.

Deeper and thicker than the open shape, with the root a full octave lower.
If it sounds off
- Open D string goes dead
- The index finger on the G string is drooping onto the D. Curl it so the D string can vibrate freely; it is the root, and the chord collapses without it.
- High E note gets muffled
- The ring finger reaching to the 3rd fret of the B string hangs over the high E. Arch it higher so the middle finger's note at the 1st fret can speak.
- Low strings rumble in
- The low E and A do not belong here. Start the strum from the D string, or rest your thumb over the low E to be safe.
What makes it a Ddim
D · F · A♭ 1 ♭3 ♭5
Ddim is two minor thirds in a stack: D up to F, F up to A♭. D minor would have A at the top; the diminished chord pulls that fifth down a fret, and the result is a chord with no stable ground under it. It cannot end a phrase, it can only push toward the next chord.
Where does it push? One half step up, to E♭. Ddim is the leading tone chord of E♭ major, and it also serves as the ii chord in C minor. Its notes sit inside B♭7 as well, so it carries that dominant tension in a smaller package.
Ddim vs Dm
This is the clearest diminished versus minor pair on the whole instrument, because the open shapes differ by one finger. Dm puts A on the G string at the 2nd fret; Ddim moves that note down to A♭ at the 1st. Play them back to back and you hear exactly what a flat fifth does: Dm sounds sad but at rest, Ddim sounds like it is falling forward. Use Dm as a chord to stay on, and Ddim as a single tense beat between two chords, most often on the way up to E♭ or as color inside C minor.
Ddim chord questions
Is Ddim a good first diminished chord?
Yes, the best one. Three fingers, an open root, no barre, and it is one fret away from Dm, so you can hear what "diminished" means immediately.
What is the difference between Ddim and Ddim7?
Ddim has three notes: D, F, A♭. Ddim7 adds a fourth, the diminished seventh (B), for a fuller and jazzier chord. Plain Ddim or D° on a chart means the triad you see on this page.
What is the difference between Ddim and Dm?
One note. Dm has a perfect fifth (A), Ddim flattens it to A♭. On guitar that is literally one finger moved one fret on the G string.
What does Ddim resolve to?
E♭ major or E♭ minor, one half step up. That upward pull into the next fret is what diminished triads are for.
Why is the Ddim shape called movable?
The compact shapes across this site are this grip with the open D string fretted. Once every note is under a finger, sliding the shape gives you a diminished chord on any root.
