Ebm has a low position secret: xx1342. It is the open Dm shape slid up one fret, with the string that used to ring open now fretted at the 1st fret. Four fingers, four strings, and not a barre in sight.

It is not a compromise chord. The root, the third and the fifth define a minor chord, and this shape holds E♭, B♭, another E♭ and G♭, all three ingredients present. It simply sounds smaller than the barre versions.

If the barre shape sputters

The A string thuds instead of ringing: The base of the index does that work, and it is the weakest part of the barre. Slide the finger down so the A string sits under a firm segment, not under a knuckle crease.
The high E buzzes at the barre's far end: Rotate the index slightly so its harder outer edge contacts the high E, and check the barre has not drifted back from the 6th fret.
Low E hums along uninvited: An open low E against an E♭ chord is a half step clash, the worst kind. Start the strum on the A string or damp the low E with the barre fingertip.

E♭m is a minor triad: E♭, a minor third G♭, and a fifth B♭. Its home is the flat keys: it is the relative minor of G♭ major, the chord guitarists usually write as F♯, and the ii chord of D♭ major. Keys with six flats belong to pianists and horn sections more than to strummers, so on guitar you will usually meet Ebm in songs carried over from piano, or spelled as D♯m when a sharp key needs it.

E♭ major carries a G where Ebm carries a G♭. Both are barre chords on guitar, and in the common 6th fret position they differ by a single fret on the B string: the major frets it at 8, the minor at 7.
