Ab Guitar Chord

A♭ is the A flat major chord, also written G♯. It has three notes: A♭, C and E♭. With no open strings to lean on, its standard form is the six string barre shape at the 4th fret. If you already hold F at the 1st fret, the same grip four frets higher is this chord, and it presses noticeably easier there.

How to play Ab, step by step

Index finger: press flat across the low E to high E strings at fret 4
Middle finger: 5th fret, G string
Ring finger: 6th fret, A string
Pinky finger: 6th fret, D string

Easy Ab for beginners (no full barre)

Start with the four string cut of the barre shape: ring finger on the D string at fret 6, middle on the G at 5, and the index covering just the B and high E strings at fret 4.

Two strings under the index instead of six turns the hardest part of the chord into a small, manageable press, and the shape grows straight into the full barre later without anything to relearn.

It is also complete. A♭ as the root, C as the third, E♭ as the fifth: all three notes that define the chord are there, so the smaller grip is the same chord with fewer doubled notes.
