Bsus2 Ukulele Chord

Bsus2 is the B suspended second chord on ukulele. It has three notes: B, C♯ and F♯. Like every B chord on this instrument it asks for all four fingers, one per string, spread across the first four frets.

One finger per string: index on the C at the 1st fret, middle and ring at the 2nd, pinky reaching the 4th fret of the G. The suspended C♯ is the lowest fretted note.

How to play Bsus2 on ukulele, step by step

Index finger: 1st fret, C string
Middle finger: 2nd fret, E string
Ring finger: 2nd fret, A string
Pinky finger: 4th fret, G string
Strum all four strings.

The suspension lives on the C string: the index holds C♯ at the 1st fret, and when that note climbs two frets to D♯ the chord becomes plain B. That one note moving is the sus2 resolving.

If the shape is not clean

The pinky cannot reach the 4th fret: It has the G string while the index sits back at the 1st. Point the neck up a little and bring the thumb behind the 2nd fret so the hand opens along the neck instead of across it.
The middle strings choke each other: Index, middle and ring all land within two frets of each other. Curl each finger so it presses on its tip; one flat finger here silences a neighbour.
The chord sounds uneven: Four fretted strings means four chances for a weak note. Pick the strings one at a time and fix the quiet one before strumming again.

What makes it a Bsus2

Bsus2 replaces the third of the B chord, D♯, with C♯. What is left is a root, a whole step and a fifth, so the chord is neither major nor minor; it hangs until the C♯ moves. Usually it climbs back to D♯ for B major, or falls to D for B minor.

The same three notes read from F♯ spell F#sus4, the sus4 twin every sus2 has a fifth up. B chords live in the keys of B, E and F♯, which is guitar and band territory more than ukulele territory, so this chord mostly appears when a song is played in its original key rather than moved to C or F.

Bsus2 vs Bsus4

Bsus2 hangs C♯ a whole step below the missing third; Bsus4 hangs E a half step above it. Both start from the same four finger B shape and move one note.

The sus4 is the impatient one: it leans on B and resolves within a beat or two. The sus2 is emptier and calmer, happy to sit for a bar while the melody moves over it.

Is Bsus2 hard to play?

It is one of the harder ukulele shapes: four fingers, one per string, across four frets. The shapes further up the page trade the spread for a barre, which some hands prefer.

Is Bsus2 major or minor?

Neither. The D♯ that would decide it has been swapped for C♯, so the chord floats until a third returns.

What is the difference between Bsus2 and Bsus4?

Bsus2 replaces the third with C♯, a whole step over the root; Bsus4 replaces it with E, a fourth over it. The sus4 is tenser, the sus2 more open.

Is Bsus2 the same as F#sus4?

They contain the same three notes, B, C♯ and F♯. If the song treats B as home the chord is Bsus2; if F♯ is home it is F#sus4.

What does Bsus2 resolve to?

B major when the C♯ climbs to D♯, or B minor when it falls to D. Nothing in the chord blocks either.
