Ab Piano Chord

A flat major is the Ab piano chord. It has three notes: A flat, C and E flat. Two of them are black keys with a white key in the middle, the same comfortable shape as E flat major.

How to play Ab on piano, step by step

  1. Start on the A♭ below middle C. That is the lowest note of the chord.
  2. Thumb (1): A♭
  3. Middle finger (3): C
  4. Little finger (5): E♭
  5. Press them together with the right hand. The left hand plays the same notes with fingers 5, 3, 1 an octave lower, or just A♭ on its own as a bass note.

The black, white, black shape is the same one E flat major uses. If that chord is comfortable, this is the identical hand position moved along the keyboard.

If it sounds wrong

The outer notes are on the wrong black keys
A flat is in the group of three black keys, and E flat is in the group of two. Finding the groups first is quicker than counting up from a white key.
The middle finger hits a black key
The middle note is C, a white key, and it sits between the two groups of black keys. Aim for the front part of it, where there is room.
The chord sounds thin
Check all three notes are sounding. With two fingers deep on black keys and one forward on a white one, the white note is the one most often missed.
