How to play Bbmaj9 on piano, step by step

1. Start on the B♭ below middle C. That is the lowest note of the chord.
2. Thumb (1): B♭
3. Index finger (2): D
4. Middle finger (3): F
5. Ring finger (4): A
6. Little finger (5): C
7. That reach is wider than an octave, so most players split it: play B♭ with the left hand and the other notes with the right. If you keep it in one hand, leave out the fifth (F), the note the chord misses least.

After the thumb lands on B flat the rest of the hand plays white keys only. The seventh, A, and the ninth, C, surround the missing high B flat, which is exactly where the shimmer of the chord comes from.

If it sounds wrong

The stretch is too wide

Split it: B flat in the left hand, D, F, A and C in the right. The right hand part is four white keys in a row of comfortable gaps.

Nothing matches the chart

Check the bottom note is the black key B flat, not B natural. Starting one key too high moves every relationship in the chord.

It sounds bluesy

That is A flat in place of A natural. With the flat seventh the chord becomes Bb9 and starts pushing toward E flat; the major ninth needs A natural.

It is the I chord of B flat major at its softest. B flat is a horn key and a church key, so this chord does a lot of work in gospel and soul, where the plain triad would sound too blunt.

Bbmaj9 is Bbmaj7 with a C added on top. The seventh chord already leans back; the ninth adds air above it.

On the keyboard the difference is one white key and a wider reach. Most players split Bbmaj9 between the hands, which the seventh chord never needs.
